Why Fall Is an Important Time to Love Your Feet
Even though our feet are now being hidden away in socks and boots for the next several months, now is no time to slack on regular foot care. In fact, podiatrists say autumn foot care is one of the most essential steps to keeping your feet healthy. In today’s post, Dr. Hubert Lee at CarePlus Foot & Ankle Specialists in Bellevue, WA, is sharing some fall foot care tips.
Caring For Your Feet This Fall
While many think spring and summer are the only times for pedicures, we recommend people elevate their foot care pampering in the fall. Women should still get a pedicure twice a month and use foot lotion daily. But regular pedicures and daily moisturizing aren't the only essential steps to proper autumn foot care.
Here are some other foot care routines to keep your feet healthy, strong, and beautiful through pumpkin season and beyond.
- Take a break from nail polish. In the autumn, your toenails aren’t constantly on display like they are during the warmer months. Constantly having polish on your nails can be unhealthy. The nails can weaken when wearing nail color year-round, so it’s a good time to go polish-free or choose a lighter shade of polish that isn’t as hard on the nails.
- Exfoliate regularly.Use a foot file at least once weekly, but only on dry skin. When the feet are wet, not only does it mask the area to be treated, but the skin becomes elastic and does not exfoliate as well.
- Try some warming foot soaks. Not only will the warmed water help relax and soothe chilly autumn feet, but foot soaks also help reduce stress and can make you feel and look years younger.
- Choose the right footwear. Your footwear should have a thicker heel, is not too high or too flat.
If you follow these fall foot care tips year-round, they will help guard against aging feet. Women especially suffer from dry skin on their feet as they experience hormonal changes. Their skin thins, and the subcutaneous fat is gone, the soft tissues or plantar fascia become lax, and the sweat glands reduce in effectiveness.
