Diabetes Awareness Month: Caring for Your Feet with Diabetes

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, a vital time to highlight the importance of managing diabetes effectively! One often overlooked aspect of diabetes care is its connection to foot health, so CarePlus Foot and Ankle Specialists is here to shed light on how important proper foot care is for individuals living with diabetes:

Understanding the Risks

People with diabetes can develop neuropathy, which diminishes sensation in the feet. Minor injuries or blisters can go unnoticed, potentially leading to infections or ulcers. Additionally, diabetes can lead to poor blood flow, making it harder for wounds to heal. Regular foot care is essential to mitigate these risks.

Daily Foot Care Routine

  1. Inspect Your Feet Daily: Check for any cuts, blisters, redness, or swelling. Use a mirror to see the soles of your feet, or ask someone to help if you can't see well.
  2. Keep Your Feet Clean and Dry: Wash your feet daily with mild soap and warm water, then dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes. Moisturize your feet to prevent dry skin, but avoid applying lotion between the toes to reduce the risk of fungal infections.
  3. Choose Proper Footwear: Wear well-fitting shoes that provide support and cushioning. Avoid walking barefoot, as it increases the risk of injury. Regularly check the insides of shoes for any foreign objects that could cause harm.
  4. Trim Your Toenails Carefully: Cut your toenails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. If you have difficulty, seek professional help.
  5. Manage Your Blood Sugar Levels: Maintaining stable blood sugar levels can help prevent complications, including those affecting your feet.

When to Seek Medical Attention

If you notice any cuts, sores, or changes in color or temperature in your feet, consult your healthcare provider immediately. Early intervention can prevent more severe complications, such as infections or amputations.

This Diabetes Awareness Month, take action to promote foot health awareness and ensure that diabetes doesn’t overshadow your quality of life.
