Ask the Foot Doc – Calf Pain

Question:
I heard a loud pop and then felt immediate sharp, stabbing pain in my calf.  What could cause this?  I also had a charlie horse in same calf yesterday.

Answer:
Gastrocnemius Tear
You may have torn your calf muscle.  This painful injury is commonly known as tennis leg.  Calf muscle strains or tears typically occur during activities that require sudden changes in direction like tennis.  A pop may be heard or felt in the back of the leg, and there will be some swelling and bruising.  Please have your calf pain evaluated to begin proper treatment.
