4 Causes and Remedies for Sweaty Feet in Winter

Have you ever questioned why your feet perspire, even during winter? While many think that sweating or foot odor only happens in summer, there are a number of factors that contribute to this issue in the winter months. Today Dr. Hubert Lee of CarePlus Foot & Ankle Specialists is sharing some causes and remedies for sweaty feet.

What Causes Sweaty Feet?

Your footwear. During the colder months, we typically wear warmer, insulated footwear. When your feet are enclosed in footwear that doesn’t allow them to breathe, bacteria thrive.

Changes in temperature. Changes in temperature – such as when you go back inside after walking outside in the snow or slush – make your feet work harder to control the temperature, and in doing so, they sweat.

Drier skin. Because the air is so much drier during winter, our skin tends to dry out quicker, providing food for the bacteria that can cause feet to smell.

Layering thick socks. Wearing several pairs of socks can keep your feet warm and toasty, but it also seals the sweat in, causing foot odor. Wearing two or more pairs of socks can cause friction, which can cause corns or calluses to develop, resulting in excessive sweating and odor.

Remedies for Sweaty Feet

There are several things you can do to prevent foot odor this winter.

  • If your shoes or boots get wet, wear a different pair the next day until they dry out completely.
  • Exfoliate your feet to remove dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin.
  • Take off your warm boots as soon as you’re back inside so they can air out and so your feet don’t overheat.
  • Change layers of socks often if you tend to sweat a lot and wear socks that wick moisture away.
  • To give your feet a chance to air out, wear breathable footwear.

The hardest working part of your body is your feet! These amazing and complex structures keep us standing, stepping, exercising, and walking over a lifetime, yet they are often under-appreciated.

Thank Your Feet with Proper Foot Care

Here are some practical ideas to thank your feet for a job well done.

  • Examine your feet daily, particularly if you have diabetes. Keep an eye out for anything unusual like a cut, scrape, bruise or blister and any signs of nail fungus or ingrown toenails.
  • Just as you wash your face each day, be sure to cleanse your feet with warm soapy water and dry them thoroughly, paying extra attention to the area between the toes.
  • Apply moisturizing lotion every day to keep skin hydrated, but don’t put any moisturizing creams or lotions between the toes.
  • Trim toenails regularly being sure to cut them straight across, not rounded at the corners, to avoid ingrown toenails.
  • Always try to wear cushioned, comfortable shoes that have sufficient arch support. The toe box should be wide enough to allow movement. Keep high heels and narrow shoes for special occasions to avoid corns and calluses.
  • If your footwear is damp, allow it to dry thoroughly before wearing them again.
  • To maintain proper blood flow to your feet, put them up when at rest. Move your toes and rotate ankles frequently and avoid sitting with your legs crossed for extended periods of time.
  • If you are diabetic, work together with your health care team to keep your blood sugar at proper levels.
  • And most importantly, be aware of any persistent ankle or foot pain or skin condition.

Top 5 Cold Weather Foot Problems

Cold weather sports can really pump up the adrenalin, whether it’s sledding, skiing or just walking through the snow. To enjoy your winter activities to the fullest, there are some cold weather foot problems you’ll want to avoid. Today Dr. Hubert Lee of CarePlus Foot & Ankle Specialists is sharing some information on some of the most common foot issues associated with the colder weather.

Athlete’s Foot

While many think athlete’s foot is a problem only encountered during the warmer weather, winter moisture can also cause this fungal infection. When you layer a couple of pairs of socks, your sweaty feet can’t breathe properly. This can cause athlete’s foot and a bacterial infection on top of it. Avoid this problem by choosing socks made of acrylic-wool blends that wick moisture away from the toes and feet.

Fractures

It’s important to train properly before beginning any activities, so you can reduce the risk of twisting an ankle, falling, or slipping. Skaters, snowboard, and skiing devotees are especially disposed to accidents that can result in a fractured ankle. Wearing properly fitted boots or shoes with padded socks can decrease risks by ensuring that the feet are properly protected.

Dry Skin

This is the most common cold-weather foot condition, particularly among men. The cracks not only look unappealing, if deep enough, they can be painful. The easiest way to help prevent dry skin on your feet is to consistently apply moisturizing cream, especially after a shower.

Foot Pain

This can have multiple causes and can happen at any time, any place. If you want to avoid being put out of action by pain or discomfort, be sure to see your podiatrist if the discomfort lasts more than a couple of days and has no clear cause.

Blisters

While you can get a blister at any time of the year, there are two factors that make it especially likely that you’ll get one in the winter. One of those factors is winter equipment rentals such as ski boots or skates. It can be challenging to find the correct fit. If the boot or skate is a little too loose at the heel, for example, the rubbing that is created from your foot moving around can result in a blister. Wear padded socks to fill in the gaps in a loose-fitting rental skate or boot.

One other issue is all the time you spend on your feet during holiday shopping.
